the most southern of french islands, belonging to the windward islands in the lesser Antilles. It's a friench overseas "departement" (since 1946) part of the European Union. It's approximately 4.400 miles from France, 2.000 from New-York city, 280 from the south american coast. The northern part of the island consist of a large montain range that includes the highest of all, Mount Pelé (4.260 ft). The center part is the plain of Lamentin, located in the East of the Bay of Fort-de-France (the capital). The southern part has a very indented coastlines with may coves ("Anse") and beautiful beaches : white sand, coconut trees, clear waters… The countryside particulary hilly and these hillis are called here "Morne".
